About Yahoo! Web Hosting

HostPapa Review - Control Panel
Yahoo Web Hosting Control Panel

The Internet giant has now become a major player in the web hosting business along with its other products such as their search engine, directory, malls, auctions, shopping, search marketing, etc.

Yahoo Small Business, as their web hosting service is named, offers shared hosting products for personnal websites or blogs and for small business owners.

Performance & Reliability

Yahoo! is using the same solid infrastructure for their own websites and their web hosting products, therefore providing one of the most reliable services around. All websites are spanned across multiple web servers preventing any downtime by switching to another server in case of hardware failure.

Backups are taken hourly so data loss is not a probable issue here.

Support

This is where Yahoo! fails to deliver: despite their promise to offer great 24/7 support to their customer, their service is almost non-existent. Customers have to go through a series of voice menus in order to reach a person.

And while Yahoo! provides you with a huge knowledge base, you may want to bookmark useful articles preciously because it's very difficult to find what you're looking for in there.

Features And Pricing

Whereas they used to have multiple hosting packages, Yahoo! has now switched to a single one-size-fits-all plan priced at $11.95 per month. Their poorly-designed control panel will take you back to the late 90's where text menus ruled and intuitivity was almost inexistant making it very hard to use.

Yahoo! provides you with some fairly good site building tool that will allow you to build a simple - but unoriginal - website within minutes. Other than that you get access to a script installer from which you can install a handful of applications: Wordpress, Gallery2, phpBB, PhpNuke and Ysurvey.

For some reason, Yahoo! puts a restriction on the file size you can store on their server, therefore preventing you to host large files so one might take this in consideration.

Pros: reliable hosting architecture.

Cons: unintuitive and poorly designed control panel, very few scripts to install, limited features, poor customer support, unuseable knowledgebase, expensive.
