I have just bought a hosting account with StartLogic a couple of days ago to see what it was like. If you don’t know about StartLogic, they are a well-know hosting company offering Cheap Website Hosting and Virtual Private Servers (read our StartLogic Review). They are supposedly offering Dedicated Hosting too but all their dedicated servers have been “sold out” for quite a while now.
Signing Up With StartLogic
I went with the ProLogic Hosting Plan which offers unlimited storage and and transfer with support for the most common needs: PHP, Perl, CGI, SSI and MySQL databases. The signup process went smoothly and I used Paypal to pay for the service (although you can use most major credit cards too).
Awkwardly, I was sent back to StartLogic’s homepage after completing the transaction instead of going to a “thank you” page. For a moment I thought something went wrong but about 30 seconds later I got a confirmation email.
Unfortunately the email contained little information but the URL to the control panel and a few details. I wish they would’ve sent me more informations like how to setup my domain and stuff like that. Since I used a domain name registered elsewhere, I thought they’d send me the information on how to set my nameservers.
Help Me!
After going circles in their knowledgebase for about 10 minutes, I finally found the information I was looking for (ns1.startlogic.com and ns2.startlogic.com). Still I decided to test their customer support and opened a ticket to see how long it would take them to reply on a Saturday. To my surprise, I got an answer about 30 minutes later from Von Kelly, which was very professional and provided me with more information than I needed.
StartLogic offers vDeck which isn’t a bad control panel but it’s far from being as good as cPanel. The control panel is blended within StartLogic’s main website and makes things a little confusing sometimes. The lack of a good script installer, such as Fantastico Deluxe, will leave unexperienced users left by themselves.
Should You Host With StartLogic?
I’ve got mixed feelings about StartLogic.
I mean the signup process went nicely and customer support was really fast. They’ve got a strong network and server infrastructure which should be very solid (at least in theory). But unfortunately, one doesn’t have to search the web for a very long time before finding a lot of negative comments.
At this point, I got three (3) websites in production on some other web hosts I am very comfortable with: HostPapa, HostGator and Lunarpages. I’ve also got another website under development that’s hosted with InMotion Hosting. And finally I’ve got TheWebHostingHero.com hosted on a VPS from FutureHosting.biz.
I gotta say that I wouldn’t switch from any of these hosts to StartLogic. vDeck just isn’t up to par compared to cPanel and considering the fact that my current web hosts are extremely reliable, I just wouldn’t take the risk of hosting anywhere else at this time.
So what’s your opinion? Are you a current StartLogic customer or have been one in the past?
