Two companies tied as the most reliable web hosting providers for October 2009, according to internet security and analytics site Netcraft.
SingleHop and Acens were neck-and-neck for first place in the table for the month’s 10 most reliable web hosts.
US-based SingleHop, that also provides services in the UK, Canada, Australia, France and Mexico, is also celebrating a 19.5% income increase for the quarter ending June 30, 2009. The company has hit top place in the Netcraft listings twice this year – the previous number one was in March.
Acens is a Spanish web provider founded in 1997 that has never hit top place in the Netcraft listings before.
INetU was a close second – hitting the top ten in nine out of 10 months in 2009.
Out of the top 10, eight are Linux based OS running PHP and Apache. One of the remaining two runs Windows Server 2008 and the other FreeBSD.
UK-based Netcraft measures performance of 50 leading web-hosting providers at 15-minute intervals from different sites around the web. The figures are averaged each 24 hours. Other statistics include outage times.
The sample collection points are in London, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Phoenix and Aruba, Italy. They are selected, as the web providers based there own their data centres.
Netcraft does point out that their statistics are not infallible – for instance, said the firm, US providers have an advantage as more collectors are based in the US, while the Far East is at a disadvantage because no collectors are based there.
Caching systems like Akaimai can give false readings as well as the Akaimai server may be closer to the collecting point than the web server.
“Only hundredths of a second separate the performances of the very top companies,” said a Netcraft spokesman. “Avoiding companies with higher outage times is probably a better factor to consider a web provider with the faster connection time.”
