A common objection to the cloud is a perceived lack of control, but users no longer have that excuse. Cloudkick is an infrastructure management tool that helps users manage servers across multiple providers, from a single dashboard.
The tool makes it easy to manage a hybrid infrastructure-a great functionality for users who are serious about the cloud. The service includes comprehensive reporting and monitoring tools, which gives users good insight and control over the cloud. Cloudkick’s vision is to create an environment in which companies can run any application in the cloud, with only minimal support requirements; and to date, Cloudkick has helped users manage over a million cloud servers.
The Cloudkick offering will be integrated into the Rackspace product line over the next few months. There will be no disruption for existing Cloudkick customers, and the new arrangement will give the company even greater resources and backing from Rackspace-so customers can look forward to greater developments in the future. The deal is a big win for Cloudkick customers, who will gain access to Rackspace’s “Fanatical Support” and the entire Rackspace product line. All basic monitoring checks for Cloudkick will now be free (including HTTP, HTTPS, PING/ICMP, SSH, DNS and TCP) on unlimited servers for all accounts. To date, Cloudkick customers have enjoyed the ability to view all of their cloud servers in the dashboard-and now the addition of basic free checks from the same interface makes it even more valuable and powerful.
The deal gives Cloudkick a lot more resources to help develop the tool faster than would otherwise be possible, and we look forward to seeing more powerful versions of Cloudkick in the coming months. Cloudkick will retain its headquarters in San Francisco.
Rackspace has always been a leader in helping people move to the cloud, and the acquisition of Cloudkick fits in well with that mission. Any Rackspace customer will be able to add their servers to the Cloudkick dashboard, and the tools from both companies will become well integrated. The integration though, doesn’t mean that you’re limited to a Rackspace Cloud: Cloudkick will continue to support multiple third-party clouds.
