Hostgator continues to impress both industry observers and web hosting customers with stellar results for the period 2005 to 2008. Revenue increased from $3.4 million to $34.2 – an impressive 896% increase where the ‘Business Products and Services’ industry benchmark is just 24%, according to research firm, Sageworks.
This performance saw Hostgator ranked #239 for 2009 on the top 5000 list of privately owned companies maintained by Inc.com. Their criteria for qualifying companies is clear:
“The Inc. 500|5000 is ranked according to percentage revenue growth from 2005 through 2008. To qualify, companies must have been founded and generating revenue by the first week of 2005, and therefore able to show four full calendar years of sales. Additionally, they have to be U.S.-based, privately held, for profit, and independent — not subsidiaries or divisions of other companies — as of December 31, 2008 (a number of companies on the list have gone public or been acquired since that date). Revenue in 2005 must have been at least $200,000, and revenue in 2008 must have been at least $2 million.”
Web hosting companies have had a tough time making a significant impact on rankings in previous years. Not so Hostgator, who also posted an incredible #29 in 2008. While their overall ranking is down this year, what can’t be denied is a company who doubled revenues between 2007 and 2008, as well as adding an extra 100 technical staff in the Houston area. They’ll also have been pleased to rank #6 for companies in the Greater Houston (Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown) area and #20 in the overall Business Products & Services category.
What’s behind Hostgator’s continued success? We suspect it’s because they continue to give customer support the very highest attention, as explained by the company’s Director of Marketing, Chad Bean, writing on their blog (http://blog.hostgator.com/2008/08/21/inc-5000-2008/) this time last year:
“Because support is key in the Web-hosting business, the company never outsources support and keeps technical support staff available 24/7, with an average wait time of one minute for inbound calls. It also provides developed templates and specialized software licensing to clients for free to enhance the company’s service offering.”
Building up and maintaining a customer-focused web hosting business takes time, attention and ongoing technical excellence. Clearly Hostgator are continuing to execute on a business model that’s been the foundation of their success to date.
