With a name like GreenGeeks, you can tell right away that being environmentally friendly is a priority for this company. Energy must come from somewhere, and naturally, GreenGeeks does use the energy grid to guarantee a constant power flow. But to offset that usage, they purchase three times the amount of energy used in wind energy credits.
The company has been a leader in providing conventional shared hosting accounts for individuals and small businesses. Many users have been asking GreenGeeks for higher-end solutions however, and Green Geeks CEO Trey Gardner has responded.
Last week, the company announced a new green Virtual Private Server hosting solution to complement its range of shared hosting accounts. The new VPS plans offer more power and capacity than a traditional shared account, as well as greater control. The plans range from an affordable $19.95 a month for a VPS with 384MB of RAM; to $99.95 a month for a 2048MB solution. The VPS plans will be hosted on high-end enterprise hardware with Dual quad core Xeon processors, with RAID-10 storage arrays and OpenVZ virtualization.
GreenGeeks customers taking advantage of the new VPS offering will be able to choose between a self-managed or a fully-managed service. The offering, which includes cPanel/WHM instances running on CentOS 5, will also include a free eNom account for reselling domains, a billing system, and free site migration.
Green technology has become a drawing point for much of the web hosting industry. Despite the fact that it would be impossible for a web hosting provider to go “off-grid”, more companies are moving in the same direction as GreenGeeks by purchasing alternative energy offsets.
