GoDaddy Unveils Its Cloud Computing Solution

June 21st, 2011

GoDaddy Unveils Its Cloud Computing SolutionGoDaddy, the world’s largest domain name registrar, has now entered the cloud computing arena with their new service called Data Center On Demand. GoDaddy’s new cloud service will compete with and potentially take away market share from both Rackspace and Amazon Web Services.

Moreover, GoDaddy’s cloud computing plans will be a major deviation from the usual infrastructure as a service model where there is an hourly charge for the resources being used according to demand. Specifically and according to GoDaddy’s marketing brochure for Data Center On Demand, there will be three option for customers and each of these options will provide a fixed resource amount for a set monthly fee while additional resources will be available on an “a la carte” basis.

In addition, GoDaddy’s cloud computing plans are also a major change from the usually IaaS value proposition as the company was initially suggesting that customers should already have IT professional staff in place. However and when Data Center On Demand is publicly launched, there will be a graphical interface for server management. Specifically and for the resource orchestration layer, GoDaddy’s cloud will use Cloud.com’s CloudStack private-cloud software.

And while GoDaddy’s new cloud service may lack pricing flexibility, the company is well known in the industry and already has a huge customer base to market its cloud services to. Moreover, GoDaddy has already reserved at least two URLs for their Data Center On Demand service: datacenterondemand.com and elasticdatacenters.com.

GoDaddy’s Data Center On Demand cloud service will be in a limited release phase for now with a full launch expected in July.
