Reseller Hosting: How To Create Packages - Part 2

August 4th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Reseller Hosting - How To Create PackagesIn the first part of this tutorial, we’ve seen how to create a feature list using WHM. Now we’re going to use this feature list to create a package.

A package is a set of predefined features that will be applied to your customer’s hosting account. For example, it defines the available disk space, the number of databases available, the number of email accounts that can be created, etc.

While it’s not necessary to have some packages prior to creating a user account, it makes things a lot easier to manage. For instance, you could upgrade a hosting package by increasing its disk space limit and automatically all user accounts using this package would be updated within a few clicks instead of updating all accounts manually.

How To Create A Package Using WHM

First log into WHM using your reseller account username and password. The WHM control panel is usually available at http://www.yourdomain.com:2086.

From the left column menu, click on Add Packages under the Package section. Now we need to give a name to this hosting package so let’s name it Starter Plan.

We’re going to set the maximum disk space to 250MB and the bandwidth limit to 2500MB. I always try to set the bandwidth limit to ten times the allocated disk space. Below is a screenshot of all the defined features in my Starter Plan package:

Below the Resources box, you will see the Settings options. While you can give SSH access to your users, I prefer not to since it could be a huge security breach. We will enable Frontpage Extensions as well as CGI Access for this package.

I’ve selected the x3 cPanel Theme since it’s my favorite one. I think it’s faster than other themes in my opinion. You will also need to select the Feature List you’ve previously created.

When you’re done, hit the Add button at the bottom. If everything went correctly, WHM should tell you that the package has been created.

Now that you’ve got a hosting package defined, you are ready to create user accounts. Stay tuned for our next tutorial on reseller hosting.
