How To Install OpenX On HostGator Account (Video)

May 28th, 2008 · 5 Comments

As per request, I am posting this OpenX video tutorial. If you don’t know what is OpenX (aka OpenAds) yet, it is a free ad server that allows you to manage ads displayed on your website(s). OpenX uses PHP and a MySQL database.

I’ve done two videos, the first one being How To Install OpenX on HostGator Shared Hosting. Even though the video has been made using my HostGator account, you can use the same procedure on most cPanel hosting accounts. Other good hosting companies such as HostPapa, Lunarpages, BlueHost or HostMonster offer cPanel hosting.

In this video, I use WinRAR to extract files from the OpenX zip file but you can use the tool of your choice. I also make use of Filezilla FTP client to upload files to my server.

I’m currently making a video on How To Install OpenX on GoDaddy since the process is a bit different. Most of the difference resides in the MySQL database creation process. GoDaddy host their MySQL servers on a different host than the web server itself so the OpenX setup configuration is a little different.

Stay tuned as I will post another video soon, this time showing you how to use OpenX and how to integrate it into your Wordpress blog.

Thanks for your video tutorial.
I have followed to the T and my site is running with OpenX.
Just a few points that I found from my experience:
1. NEVER use special characters for the Database Password (,+,-…,etc.). You have to use numbers and lower case letters (0-9, a-z) ONLY.
Otherwise you will spend hours trying to fix rare error messages in the installation…
2. The Banner Size SHOULD MATCH with the Zone Ads Size, otherwise you will never find how to link them, and again, you will spend hours trying to find out why.
3. If your serviced ad site is in the same hosting server as your OpenX installation, then use ONLY Local Mode Zone Invocation Tag. Don’t use JavaScript as shown in the video
Otherwise your will have a long delay time loading your webpages.

Regards,
Oikos Nomos.

Thank you for your tips Oikos. Although I disagree with the third point you make.

For instance, using the local invocation code on a Wordpress blog will break your website if Wordpress and OpenX do not share the same database.

Personnally I’ve always used the Javascript and iframe code and it never slowed down my sites.

Another website I own (HomeMusician.net) has 12,000 uniques a day and using the Javascript invocation code doesn’t slow it down a bit.

:)
