Soho Launch is a nice website builder that allows anyone to build a website no matter the level of expertise they have. Most of the time you can get it for free with some web hosting companies such as HostPapa.
Earlier this week I’ve shown you How To Install Soho Launch Pro Edition On HostPapa so this time we’ll take a quick tour into this great website builder so you can see how to setup your first website.
So assuming you have installed Soho Launch correctly, it should now be accessible at http://www.yourdomain.com/sohoadmin. Soho Launch will popup a new window and you will be prompted to enter your username and password.

To make this as easy as possible, we’re going to use the wizard to build our first website so hit the green button that says “Start Wizard”.
On the next screen you will to choose a template for your website. For this tutorial, we’ll be using the “Curvy Neighborhood (Orange)” template from the “Real Estate” category. Once you’ve clicked on the desired template, you will be brought with a list of available pages for your website. We’ll select Services, About Us, News, Contact Us and Support. Hit Next when you’re done.

Finally on the last page of the wizard, you will be prompted to enter your website’s name and your email address. That’s it, you’re ready to fill the pages of your website!
At this point you should now seeing Soho Launch’s main menu. Click on the blue “Edit Page(s)” button at the top. This will bring you a list of all the pages created for your website. Simply click on the “Edit” button next to the page you want to modify.

You will now see a grid containing all the objects from your web page (actually there should be only one object). Click on the object to launch the editor. You will be prompted to choose between the basic or advanced editor. We’ll just use the basic editor for this tutorial.

A new window will popup, bringing you with a nice and clean web page editor. I won’t go into details about using the editor, it’s pretty much like using a word processor. So go ahead, edit your page and hit the “Save” button when you’re done.

But wait! You’re not over yet! Don’t forget to click on the green “Save Page” button at the top! Now open a new browser window and visit your website. You should now see your brand new website with the changes you’ve made to your web pages!
Of course this is a very basic tutorial, but hey you gotta start somewhere! There’s so much more to Soho Launch than creating basic websites. You can add web forms, photo albums, newsletters, a shopping cart, online transactions, change your website template and lots more.

You mention that one can get Soholaunch for free with some web hosting services. My present web hosting service, Blue Host, offers Soholaunch, but I would have to pay $20.00 a month for the service or $180.00 per year, every year. On the other hand, I could buy Dreamweaver for about $125.00 and create a site and be done with it for a lot less money than Soholaunch wants to charge me through Blue Host. I therefore have two questions: (1) Should I buy Dreamweaver and use that to create my website to be hosted through Blue Host? (2) Should I find a different hosting company, one that offers Soholaunch for free, and contract with that other company to be my web host and work with that company to use Soholaunch through the other web host and forget about Blue Host? If you know of other web hosting companies which offer Soholaunch for free, please tell their names so that I can investigate those companies and decide what to do.
Thanks very much for your input.
Sincerely,
Joe McNally

@Joe: Dreamweaver is by far one of the best website creation software out there (if not the best). But it requires more expertise than Soho Launch.
I say if you are willing to spend some time to learn to use Dreamweaver, go for it 100%. It’s so much more powerful and you’ll find plenty of awesome templates on sites like templatemonster.com
It will also give you the ability to integrate other Adobe softwares like Flash.
You might also consider the option of using a CMS like Joomla. There are some nice themes available and you don’t have to learn a programming language.
You can install Joomla automatically using Fantastico Deluxe from Bluehost’s control panel.

I would be really carefult of the free Soholaunch version offered for free with some web hoting services.
I’m using a free version of Soholaunch offered by my web host provider ” Vodahost”. My website had a problem and they had to re-configure my root account.
The backup/restore within soholaunch have not worked so I can’t restore my website. I’ve been trying to get help from vodahost customer support for almost a month now with not answers.
Finally I’ve logged on the soholaunch forum and I found a posting by someone saying that the back/up restore function doesn’t work in the free so at this point on time I’m still stranded with no anwers and what’s worse my website has been down for more than 3 weeks.
This is leaving me with the only option to use Dreamweaver as the most important for a Web site is to be reliable, always on line, and fast.
Hope this helps.

As a professional in the industry, I can tell you straight away that learning the basics of Dreamweaver will be more productive than paying for a service from SohoLaunch without a doubt.
