Follow Up On OpenX Installation Issue On GoDaddy Hosting

May 29th, 2008 · No Comments

Following up on my last post on How To Install OpenX On GoDaddy Hosting, I’ve encountered a problem during the OpenX setup.

There was an error message about the register_argc_argv PHP setting that needed to be enabled in order to activate automatic maintenance.

So what exactly does this PHP setting affect?

The register_argc_argv tells PHP whether to declare the argv & argc variables (that would contain the GET information). Basically it allows you to pass arguments to a PHP script that is called through command line.

Here’s the answer I’ve got from GoDaddy’s support:

Thank you for contacting Online Support.

Unfortunately, register_argc_argv is not available in our shared hosting
accounts and we cannot activate for you. We apologize for any
inconvenience this may cause.

Please let us know if there is anything further that we can do for you.
Our service departments and telephone lines are open 24 hours a day, 365
days a year to accommodate your needs anytime.

So what impact does it have on OpenX?

It really doesn’t have a major impact. The scheduled maintenance performs tasks such as recalculating banner priorities, banner cache, generating statistics and stuff like that. The thing is that if automated maintenance is disabled, the maintenance has to be performed upon banner delivery.

So basically this means that it could slow down banner delivery on your website.
