cPanel Basics: Creating Additional FTP Accounts

cPanel Tutorial - Creating Additional FTP AccountsHow many times have you been asked by a customer or a supplier if you have an FTP server so they can transfer you some large files?

FTP is a protocol that allows a computer to transfer files from or to a remote server (called an FTP Server). Access to the FTP Server can either be anonymous or restricted by user credentials.

If you are using cPanel, you probably know you’ve got a main FTP account because you used it to upload your website. But what if you wanted to create additional FTP accounts so that not everybody has access to the whole storage space?

Here’s how to create additional FTP accounts in cPanel:

  1. Log into cPanel (the URL is usually http://www.yourwebsite:2082).
  2. Click on the FTP Accounts icon.cPanel FTP Tutorial - InMotion Hosting
  3. Specify a login name and a password for the new FTP account.
  4. If you want the FTP user to be able to upload files to be available on your website, you’ll have to give access to a sub-directory of public_html (ie.: /public_html/johndoe). Otherwise you may want to create a directory specifically for your user. If the directory doesn’t exist, it will be created.cPanel FTP Account Creation Tutorial
  5. Click on Create FTP Account to proceed.
  6. On the next page, you’ll have all the necessary information your user will need to connect to your FTP server.

I have done this using my InMotion Hosting account so your cPanel skin or layout may differ a little than shown here.

As more and more new website owners are coming to the site lately, I’m going to show you some more basic stuff to help you get around in cPanel. So if you want to receive updates by email click here.
