12 Questions With KnownHost Sales Manager, Joel Neimond

1. Please introduce us to KnownHost. For how long have you been in the web hosting industry and how did it start?

Generally speaking, we have been in the industry for over 15 years but the brand KnownHost was born early 2006. So we have been around a long time in some shape or form.

2. KnownHost is mostly known for their VPS hosting services. What sets you apart from the competition in this market?

We consider ourselves a leader in Linux VPS solutions and pride ourselves in this. What sets us apart is our commitment to provide the best bang for your buck factoring in service and support. 3. KnownHost offers Hybrid Servers. Can you explain what a Hybrid Server is and why would somebody need one?

A Hybrid server is a highend VPS essentially which shares a highend custom built server with few others. This gives you a larger CPU share then traditional VPS’s as well more resources in all categories. A big advantage we find offering Hybrid servers is the upgrade option to our existing clients as this involves no IP change or downtime for the VPS owner and his/her clients.

4. Why would one choose a VPS or an Hybrid Server over a dedicated server?

Depending what kind of dedicated server we are talking about when choosing a VPS or Hybrid Server over a dedicated server there are a few reasons to do so. VPS’s provisioned by KnownHost are placed on custom built high end servers with enterprise grade components. If your comparing to an entry level dedicated server who is not using these enterprise components such as RAID 10, Dual Core or larger CPU’s, etc then your not going to benefit from the performance you would receive with one of our VPS or Hybrid servers. The next reason is with VPS’s and Hybrid servers you can be upgraded on the fly with no downtime. This is the not the case with dedicated servers. You must have a new server rebuilt and data moved. 5. KnownHost customers have the choice to host their virtual private server in your Texas data center or your California data center. Can you tell us more about these?

We offer VPS’s in both Texas and California both of which are solid datacenters let me point out. A few of the quality bandwidth providers used are Level 3, Global Crossing , Tiscali and Savvis. In a nutshell I would consider them the best out there and extremely reliable which is the most important thing.

6. Every VPS plans are “fully managed”. What can a customer expect from a “fully managed VPS” with KnownHost?

You can expect an experienced team of professionals to be there for you 24/7 when you need us. We back our product and take pride in what we do so you can be assured you will get assistance with any of the standard backend services when you need it. Basically fully managed VPS can be considered as your own system where you have full control over everything yet can relax and not worry about backend services in the same way as on standard shared hosting – if a customer has any problems or questions related to backend configuration we’re here to answer and assist in any way possible.

7. About how many VPS are hosted on each host and how do you ensure their reliability and performance?

We host anywhere from 10-20 VPS’s per server. As for reliability we do back this with a 99.9% SLA as well regarding performance if a customer feels their VPS isn’t peforming well we will move them on the fly to a new server.

8. KnownHost has built a strong reputation based on their excellent customer support. Can you tell us a little about your support staff (training, experience, expertise, etc.)?

We have solid Support team which includes personel from various locations allowing us to be quite diverse. This gives us a great approach as we are very customer centric and try to always do what we can to assist our customers. All staff is highly experienced with some having just 2 years of experience to some with well over a decade of experience.

9. From additional RAM to more bandwidth, KnownHost offers a lot of upgrade options. Is it possible for an existing client to upgrade his current VPS and if so, will there be a downtime due to this upgrade?

Customers can add things like RAM, Disk Space, and Bandwidth or upgrade their entire VPS with absolutely no downtime. Downgrading as well would involve no downtime so things work quite well for our customers.

10. Moving a website from a web host to another can be quite complex for someone who doesn’t have the skills or knowledge to do so. How can KnownHost help new customers to move from their current web host?

We provide free migration assistance for all customers as long as the control panel is the same. If they are the same, we take care of it the same day the request is made. Our goal is to get the customer up and running asap.

11. Are there any plans to offer fully dedicated hosting solutions in a near future?

We may add to our Hybrid server lineup as an alternative as we feel this is a great solution. We have many happy customers using this which allows them to do the seamless upgrades and downgrades which can’t be done with a Dedicated server.
