GreenGeeks CEO - Trey Gardner

Well it’s been quite a while since we last did an interview! This time around, we have the honor of interviewing none other than GreenGeeks’ CEO, Trey Gardner.

1. For the benefit of our readers, can you please introduce yourself and explain your role over at GreenGeeks?

My name is Trey Gardner and I am the owner and CEO of Green Geeks web site hosting service.

2. GreenGeeks was founded in 2006. Can you tell us how it came together?

Green Geeks is the world’s  most eco-friendly web site hosting company and since our inception it has been an integral part of our corporate ethos.  Green Geeks came together because of several factors. I had worked in the web site hosting industry for almost 10 years by the time that I started Green Geeks and I was not always in agreement with some of the corporate decisions and ways that web hosting clients were treated at some of the hosting companies I had worked for. I was ready to start my own company with my own ideals in terms of how to treat customers.

In addition to this I had been learning for several years how the web site hosting industry was environmentally unfriendly due to our high energy  consumption and eWaste. I decided to build a web site hosting company with environmentalism in mind and to try to force consumers and other web site hosting companies to adopt a more environmentally friendly approach with regards to their web site hosting. I brought on board some of the best minds and workers I had met over the years and we formed Green Geeks.

3. GreenGeeks is obviously concerned about being an eco-friendly web host. Please explain us what makes GreenGeeks a green web hosting company?

Green Geeks is the world’s most eco-friendly web site hosting provider. What we do is we buy carbon off set credits from a non profit organization which in turn invests our money into wind farms. We offset 300% of our energy consumption this way. In addition we work with the American Lung association working to clean up our air and we work with C02Neutral.com which allows us to purchase REC’s from an European pool which in turn forces industries in Europe to pay a higher amount for their REC’s or to have to incorporate efficiencies into their business to lessen their carbon footprint.

4. Lots of people think that a “business going green” is often just another marketing strategy. What’s your opinion on this?

The reality is that all businesses should want to go green because it saves them money for the most part. Purchasing carbon offsetting credits is just one way a business can go green. Installing low flow toilet’s or motion detection light switches is another. The other reason we should all go green is that we have to. At some point we will run out of carbon based energies and if we don’t, at that point, have technologies which can mass produce renewable energies then we are all in big trouble.

5. Many web hosting companies rely on customer support outsourced overseas in order to keep their prices low. Is that the case with GreenGeeks?

No, I don’t believe you can have good support, especially phone support, if you are outsourcing to another company and especially if you are outsourcing overseas.

6. GreenGeeks offers a one-size-fits-all hosting plan. What are the benefits of hosting with GreenGeeks?

There are tons of benefits to hosting with Green Geeks. We offer clients a hosting package where they can host unlimited domains on unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth. The plans come with cPanel, the most widely used control panel on the internet as well as the widely popular Fantastico script library. Our servers are high end RAID 10 servers with 8GB of RAM with Energy efficient Intel Dual Quad Core Xeon processors and BGP4 Gigabit connectivity to multiple Fiber GigE Tier 1 Backbones. In essence, great hardware & software.

We also have unbeatable 24x7x365 support and server monitoring to take care of all our clients’ needs and to ensure that their web sites are always up.

7. You also offer Green Reseller Hosting. Tell us how people can make good money from reselling your web hosting services.

Reselling web hosting is a great way for people and businesses to make money and we’re seeing more and more people get into that business, fortunately many of them using our services. Green Geeks makes it easy & affordable to make money by selling hosting, we offer great plans at a low rate with tons of instructions which in turn allows our reseller clients to offer hosting to their clients (usually local businesses) and to make a profit margin from what they collect from their clients compared to what they pay us.

8. GreenGeeks has been recently chosen as the Official Drupal for Dummies Web Host. Please tell us a little bit about this.

We were very excited when we were approached by the For Dummies writer for the Drupal For Dummies book. Lynn was writing the Drupal For Dummies book, saw that our servers were perfectly configured for Drupal (the latest version and the next Drupal version which is in beta testing at this time) and she loved the fact that we were eco-friendly. Lynn is also writing another For Dummies book which I cannot disclose but it is for a web site hosting software and a certain Green Geeky host will be the official host for that book as well.

9. What can you do to help people move their website over to GreenGeeks.com?

We actually have a service where our technicians will bundle up our new clients’ web site files and load them up into their package here at Green Geeks, free of charge. It is our Free Site migration service and many of our clients love it.

10. And what customers can expect from GreenGeeks once they signed up?

Great Service, friendly customer support and terrific uptime and speed, plus all the tools they should expect to see in a first rate web hosting provider.

11. Well thank you Trey for your time. Anything you would like to add to this interview?

Thank you for this opportunity and if you are reading this trying to make a choice about a web site hosting company, if you do not choose Green Geeks please do chose an eco-friendly Green web site hosting company.

Thank You,
Trey Gardner
