InMotion Hosting has been serving businesses since 2001, and they currently have headquarters on both coasts: In Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Marina del Rey, California. The Green Hosting company, which is accredited by the Better Business Bureau, has several initiatives to promote environmental issues, and they recently opened up the first green data center in Los Angeles. The employee-owned firm is staffed by experienced personnel, who always take the time to listen and learn from their customers.

All web hosting accounts are Max Speed Zone enabled, which means you choose your data center for faster response. All servers are located in Category-A, PCI-compliant data centers, with N+2 or N+1 power systems and multiple battery and diesel backup systems. The BGP4 network presents downtime, and you can rely on system admins to be on hand 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition, backups are generated every 36 hours up to 10GB. InMotion uses 100% Dell servers and Cisco routers, and all machines use RAID 5 protection, and you can count on a 99.9 percent uptime guarantee.

I moved 2 websites and a small number of email accounts on the day of a DDoS attack at InMotion and I still was able to get my business moved. I don't do this often and I needed the assistance. It was there! Personnel are absolutely the greatest. Service like this is rare, I can think only of Photodex as a contemporary that provides a similar level of competent, knowledgeable, service.

The account summary is great, something similar is needed for email. I found instructions here a little long on words and short on information, but that need was filled in a phone call.

The support staff had access information needed to help me, the ability to receive an email in realtime, and detailed knowledge of not only their systems but Adobe Dreamweaver to help get my website up. I am not a website designer, just a guy trying to run a business. InMotion not only provides great service, they are a great example of how service should be delivered!

Click here to reply to this review		 My most recent contact with tech support was excellent. Solution to the problem was fast, polite, and effective. A previous tech support call over another, more complex matter was also excellent.

That is my experience with tech support 80% of the time. But every now and then, I get a tech person who is abominably unhelpful and seems bent on doing nothing but ending the phone call. Some tech support responses are just an outrage, to be honest. Inmotion needs to weed out the few jerks who think they can talk down to their elders (and technical superiors).

The range of services offered by Inmotion for the price is fantastic. You can find a lower-priced service that offers the same wide range for ONE website. But you can't find any host that provides all these features for MULTIPLE websites at such a low price. I know--I've looked on those few occasions over the years when the tech people enraged me. And that multiple-website service is more important than it may look to a beginner thinking of just one. There are many reasons to be able to have more than one web site. And you don't want to have to pay two hosting fees or move your website later, believe me -- been there and done that a number of times.

The choice of shopping carts is an important feature. However, my experience trying to set up Cube Cart was the most recent abomination I went through. It didn't install properly, and two calls to tech support got me nowhere. Either Cube or the installation vehicle is a POS. I have successfully set up OSCommerce on Inmotion, but OScommerce leads to difficulties processng cards through Paypal. Cube is an approved Paypal cart, so I am left with no solution yet to an important sales problem. Inmotion also offers the cheapo (free, I think) version of a commercial cart, Shopsite. I used the expensive ($99/month) version of Shopsite for several years, and it's pretty good if you don't do too many sales (it will crash if you have 100 customers at a time--guaranteed). However, I doubt that the free version has the best feature of Shopsite, the module that allows you to track sales by partner or even by email blast. So I didn't bother with it.

I see that Inmotion also offers Zen cart. Trouble with this is that if you get tired after many hours of hassling with two carts that are insufficient for different reasons, you probably won't want to go to the trouble of installing and discovering the shortcomings of a third. So I'm stuck with an OScommerce cart that I can't get to take Paypal sales correctly, and a Cube that won't install correctly.

Summary: great tech support 80% of the time; fantastic range of features for the price; issues with shopping carts remain unresolved. I'm rating performance and reliability only "4" out of 10 because of all the time-consuming and sales-losing shopping cart problems and dead ends.

Click here to reply to this review		 Overall, the service and reliability with InMotion has been great. If I have a technical/customer service question, the online chat system is great and they usually respond quickly. In the two years there have been two slight outages. The first was apparently a server crash (according to their CS rep online).

The second was just this week. There was a DDOS attack on the shared server for my site. Things were down for about 9 hours overnight. My first online chat (which was at 11:00 PM) was short, but the customer service rep. didn't provide much information--only that there was a problem with the server that required their immediate attention. When I tried again in the morning, email and website were still down so I chatted with them again. That's when I found out they changed the IP address of the server to ward off the DDOS attack and that the DNS change was propagating throughout the internet. They were very apologetic for the service interruption.

Despite these two problems, I've never lost information, emails, website data or anything else. Service interruption was at a minimum and the CS staff is courteous and helpful.


Pros: Reliable. Helpful Customer Service and Tech. Support.
Cons: A couple of minor security issues, but you'd probably have these same problems at any hosting service.

I found that In Motion was highly rated, so I decided to go with them for that service too. What I found was that In Motion developers are about as professional and competent as anyone could possibly expect. They were always perfectly polite and considerate on the phone. And I was never put off for several days or even weeks. I was always treated with consideration. I would give them an A+ for what they did with my web site.
