If you’re hesitating between StartLogic (review) and BlueHost (review) as your next web host, read this.
BlueHost and StartLogic are both well-know hosting companies who offer cheap and affordable web hosting.
While BlueHost specializes in website hosting only, StartLogic also offers Virtual Private Servers and Dedicated Hosting solutions. So if you’re looking for for more than shared hosting, you can take BlueHost off your list from here.
So let’s see what makes BlueHost and StartLogic different from each other.
Ratings
Customer Support
BlueHost offers customer support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can reach them by phone (toll-free number), through live chat or by using their online ticket system. While their support hasn’t been rated as “perfect”, they are still pretty close and deliver professional support in a timely manner.
StartLogic is also providing 24×7 customer support and can be contacted by phone, live chat and through a support ticket system. While we haven’t got to experiment any major issue with StartLogic, numerous complaints have been reported because of the quality of their support.
Features
One of the main difference between BlueHost and StartLogic is their control panel. BlueHost provides cPanel, a mature web hosting control panel that allows you to manage all aspects of your website and is extremely easy to use. StartLogic on the other offers vDeck, a stripped down version of cPanel. While vDeck is also very easy to use, it doesn’t give you as much control as cPanel does.
BlueHost also provides you with Fantastico Deluxe, a great script installer. Within a few clicks, the less experienced of all users can install Wordpress, phpBB, osCommerce and tens of other web applications. StartLogic also has a script installer but it only offer a handful of applications.
More advanced users will also appreciate BlueHost’s SSH access. SSH (or Secure SHell) allows you to log in your webserver in terminal mode with a command line. Unfortunately StartLogic doesn’t provide this but not all users need SSH anyway.
Other than this, both StartLogic and BlueHost offer similar features such as unlimited storage, unmetered bandwidth, unlimited domain hosting, PHP, Perl, CGI, SSI and MySQL. If you plan on having your website developped using Ruby On Rails, take note that StartLogic doesn’t support it.
Conclusion
I think that BlueHost is a much better host. The fact they have like six (6) times more customers than StartLogic speaks for itself. They provide a much better control panel. vDeck is a proprietary control panel and you will only find it on other web hosts from the same owners (iPower, iPowerWeb, Dot5 Hosting and StartLogic).
As far as support and reliability goes, StartLogic has unfortunately earned a very bad reputation over the last few years. In theory, their clustered server environment with service pools should offer a solid hosting service but this doesn’t seem to be the case.
That said, I would recommend BlueHost over StartLogic.
