HostPapa Vs DreamHostJune 24th, 2008 · 3 Comments
Two of the most well-known Green Web Hosting Companies are HostPapa and DreamHost. Both web hosting companies are environmentally-friendly as they are not only energy-efficient but they also buy carbon offsets for the equivalent of carbon-dioxide their business operations produce. Today we’ll compare both web hosting providers and hopefully it will help you choose the right home for your website. HostPapa OverviewHostPapa has been delivering shared hosting services since 2006 with offices located in Niagara Falls, NY and Oakville, Ontario, Canada. As of lately, they have been opening a new office in the United Kingdom too. DreamHost OverviewBased out of Brea, California, DreamHost has been delivering hosting services since 1996. They offer a single all-inclusive shared hosting plan as well as virtual and dedicated hosting through a third party provider.
DreamHost Vs HostPapa: Shared Hosting Comparison Grid
Hosting FeaturesWhile Dreamhost allocates 500GB of storage space initially, this is increased weekly by 2GB. Same thing goes for bandwidth: you start with a 5000GB transfer limit which is increased by 40GB every week. I think that most websites will never use that much resource and if it does, chances are you’ll need a dedicated server. Many web hosting companies have stopped increasing this nonsense disk space and bandwidth and started offering unlimited storage and unmetered transfer. This is a thing to be careful with because many overselling web hosts can suspend your account if your website puts a high load on the CPU. Some other web hosts are also providing poor performances due to overselling. But that’s not the case with HostPapa. Although they do offer unlimited disk space and bandwidth, they will notify you and work with you on any issues that might cause your website to consume too much resources. As far as control panels goes, Dreamhost use their own custom control panel which in my opinion, lacks intuitivity and performance. For instance, you have to wait like 5 minutes for database creation. Control panel navigation goes through hidden menus and a tag cloud. I think it’s too messy and slow. On the other hand, HostPapa offers the ever-popular cPanel. This has to be the greatest Linux web hosting control panel and the most mature to this day. It allows you to perform common tasks such as managing email accounts, databases, addon domains and subdomains, schedule tasks, etc. You will also get access to Fantastico Deluxe, a great script installer that will get your blog, shopping cart or forum online within a few clicks.
Customer SupportHostPapa’s support staff can be contacted by phone throughout the day and by email 24×7. They have built a good reputation as far as customer support goes. All of their support staff are employees (no outsourcing). Other than customer support, HostPapa provides access to video tutorials, a knowledge base and a support forum. DreamHost on the other hand provides limited support. You can only contact them through their ticket system but you can optionally request a certain number of callbacks. They also provides tutorials and a support forum too. I think that every web hosts should offer phone support. You can waste lots of time sending emails forth and back with the service department. ConclusionWhile you shouldn’t choose a web host based on pricing, HostPapa offers more features, a better control panel and better customer support for less than DreamHost. Plus you get from three (3) countries to host from with HostPapa. Get some HostPapa coupon codes and get up to two months for free! Actually DreamHost does allow SSH. They really do grossly oversell their servers though.
