HostMonster vs 1and1

March 27th, 2009

HostMonster vs 1and1HostMonster (review) and 1and1 (review) are two of the most well-known companies you can find for professional level web hosting.  Though 1and1 is relatively new to the market it has already introduced innovative products and competitive prices, establishing itself as a pioneer company.

The company claims to be the world’s biggest web host and one of the web’s fastest growing companies.  Indeed, the site’s community is strong with an estimated 7.83 million customer contacts.  Meanwhile, HostMonster is one of the net’s oldest companies, and still one of the most widely used, with nearly a million domains under its name.

1and1 offers a variety of hosting plans from virtual servers to dedicated servers to ready-to-run eShops.  The company also speaks highly of its advanced data centers which provide high uptime for customers.  1and1 does offer an impressive 55,000 servers and does boast some high profile partners such as Microsoft, Google, Plesk and HP/Compaq.  1and1 promises 99.9% uptime for its customers.

The company offers four different plans: Beginner for $1.99 a month, Home for $2.49 a month, Business for $4.99 a month and Developer for $9.99 a month.  It should be noted that these website build plans are dependent upon the customer keeping the package contract.  With the first level plan the user gets one domain, with the Developer plan, the user gets five domains.  With the Beginning package user gets 10 GB of storage and 300 GB of bandwidth.  With the Developer deal web space is 300 GB and bandwidth is 3,000 GB.  There is also a website builder application that can help new customers build a professional looking store.

No question the beginner package is very cheap and does allow for compatibility with most new software.  However, the limitations on bandwidth and disk storage don’t sit well…at least not compared to HostMonster’s amazing package.  HostMonster does charge you a little more at $3.95 a month (though the standard price goes back to $6.95 after promotions end) but you get unlimited bandwidth, unlimited disk storage space, unlimited domains and unlimited email accounts.  You also get a free domain name forever.

HostMonster emphasizes its high quality customer service, stating that its calls are never outsourced and that hold times are less than two minutes.  The company also does not make long-term contracts, nor do they charge a cancellation fee.  Like 1and1, HostMonster also gives a 99.9% uptime promise.  1and1 does offer some nice provisions for beginners.  For a non-professional a $1.99 hosting service may be all that is required, and it doesn’t get any cheaper than that these days.  However, for the professional who is hoping to have more features, not to mention more bandwidth and storage space, HostMonster’s basic package is worth the extra cash.
