HostGator Vs Lunarpages - Overview

September 3rd, 2008 · 2 Comments

HostGator Vs LunarpagesWhen you’ve narrowed it down to HostGator and Lunarpages as your next web host, you’re definitely headed toward some major league players.

Lunarpages (review) has seen its first days in the late 90’s as a free web hosting provider. This California-based web host now has data centers located in Los Angeles, Riverside and Las Vegas and hosts over 100,000 accounts.

Founded in 2002, HostGator (review) has gained tremendous popularity in the hosting community. With over 1,000,000 domains hosted, this Florida-based web host is ranked 21st in Inc. Magazine’s Top 5000 Fastest Growing Companies in America, making them the #1 fastest-growing web host in the industry.

While both companies may seem to offer the same types of products and services, there are some differences between them. Let’s see what each of them have to offer:

Lunarpages Products and Services

  • Domain Registration and Parking
  • Email Hosting
  • Basic Web Hosting (Linux)
  • Business Hosting (Linux)
  • Windows Hosting
  • Linux and Windows VPS Hosting
  • Linux and Windows Dedicated Servers

HostGator Products and Services

  • Domain Registration
  • Website Hosting (Linux)
  • Reseller Hosting (Linux)
  • Linux and Windows Dedicated Servers

As far as customer support goes, both web hosts are definitely up to par here: true 24×7 customer support can be reached by phone and through their support ticket system. HostGator gains some points here for offering live chat as well as a toll free phone number.

As I have accounts with both Lunarpages and HostGator, I had the opportunity to test their sales and technical support.

Lunarpages’ support is very professional and friendly. I have contacted them by phone regarding a dedicated IP address for my Basic Hosting Plan. The wait time was about six (6) minutes while I hummed to a U2 song on the phone. Despite my strong accent, the technician was very patient and helped me out quickly. I also tested their support ticket system (in fact it wasn’t a test, I really needed support). It was on a Sunday afternoon so I expected a longer delay but after about an hour and fifteen minutes (1:15) they replied and solved some minor billing issues.

I’ve also had the chance to experience HostGator’s support and found them to be very dynamic and professional too. While I haven’t tested their phone support yet, I chatted with them on several occasions and they almost made me feel like they were happy I contacted them. No kidding.

So that said, HostGator and Lunarpages are two well-established web hosts who delivers great hosting products and services.

Stay tuned as we’ll have an in-depth comparison of their common hosting packages.
