FatCow vs Just Host

thanks for the comparison – i’m looking to change my web host. it’s a nightmare!
through my hunt for a good & affordable web host, i came across Just Host. and it definitely caught my eye.. your review has made me more inclined to use their service!

Fatcow does not support cron jobs. I just signed up and promptly cancelled my account after tech support at Fatcow confirmed they do not support cron.

You are right, I never noticed FatCow doesn’t support cron jobs. While it may not be needed for most basic websites, it still sucks.

This is why I always stick with cPanel hosting, everything’s there and its a business standard.

Very useful post – finding a good web host is proving a nightmare and I’d just about narrowed it down to these two. Wish I knew what a “cron” was, though! I’ve also heard good things about BlueVoda (VodaHost); does anyone have any comment on this host?

@Julie : the CRON allows you to schedule tasks to be executed automatically by the server. It can be maintenance tasks for example.

I know about VodaHost but never used them so I can’t tell.

Same problem. I did a lot of research last week and finally came to shortlist these 2 hosts. Finally decided to go for FatCow because of its more attractive web design, but turns out that they don’t provide Cron Job.

My previous post appears to have been tampered with! I certainly did NOT endorse JustHost which continues to give us so much trouble that we’re considering changing. Am looking at FatCow but also favour Blue Voda. JustHost customer support is just about non-existent and rarely addresses the problem. If you’re running a serious business avoid JustHost!

By the way, I just want to say that if you’re running a business, then get a “Business Hosting” plan. I mean, how much do you expect a business to work for you for $2.95 per month?

InMotion Hosting provides great business hosting. If you’re serious about your business, pay for a hosting package that’s meant for businesses.

Yes, well that’s a fair comment I suppose. But JustHost (which costs us more than $2.95 a month by the way!) DOES promise to deliver for very modest start-up businesses like ours and offers a more expensive business plan also. Which we’d consider upgrading to if our experience with the basic model was more positive. But perhaps you’re right and we should switch to InMotion or similar….

Just Host does cost $2.95 per month if you use a coupon code and sign up for 36 months.

That said, I’d strongly recommend you get a business web host. I personnally never even hosted any of my critical websites on a shared web host. I always used a managed VPS from FutureHosting.com

This way, I’ve always got someone monitoring my servers and support is based in the U.S.

But if you don’t want to spend as much, go for InMotion Hosting. I’ve sent a couple of friends who work online there and they’re very satisfied so far.

Web.com is also very good but a bit expensive.

@Julie : After verification, it seems that Just Host’s support is based in the UK.

The first webhost I tried is JustHost. I never thought they were anything special until I get my second webhost (for a few freelance project I made for some small companies) at Fatcow just to have a comparison. Boy I regretted everyday of my life. Their servers are down more frequently, no cpanel (very not user friendly, I had to go through all the pain to learn how to do something while I can do it in 5 mins with Justhost), plus their customer service is light years away from JustHost. Now I’m going through the painful process of migrating all the domains and sites from Fatcow to my JustHost account because Fatcow decided to DOUBLE my web hosting annual fee this year because of ‘rising maintenance cost’ while Justhost charges the same every year without repeatingly annoy me! I’m really pissed off by Fatcow. Please stay away from it. Fatcow is just a money sucking company that doesn’t care about their customers. End of story.

I last posted in 2009. At that time we narrowed things down to Fat Cow and JustHost and finally went with the latter. They did a good enough job for us, especially at the price, and their setting-up process was easy for a beginner to navigate. We did find their support was not all that great, though, and were not encouraged to upgrade. Now the many difficulties of trying to publish and sell ebooks using this system (webHost and ebook software) has made us drop the whole process and put our books on to the Amazon platform. So much more user-friendly and sure, you pay them but at least you have a better chance of getting SOMETHING for your books.

Fat Cow is extremely slow outside of the US, they are terrible. I am in the process of moving to Just host, Fat Cow is really that bad

Steve, I’d think hard about this if I was you. Don’t know about Fat Cow but JustHost support is pretty negligible unless you opt for their higher rate. In my experience web hosts rarely deliver what they promise – mind you, no web organisation is as bad as Google when it comes to taking customers money and refusing to communicate with them thereafter! And anyone else reading this – if you are into Movies, be very wary of Vuze! They took my money and definitely didn’t deliver! And when I asked for my money back within the stated 30 days, guess what! They never replied!
