What Is Green Web Hosting?

Green Web Hosting - Green EnergyMaybe you’ve heard about Green Web Hosting. Or maybe you’ve just heard from other types of industries saying that they are Green or Carbon Neutral.

Some say it’s a good thing for the environment, some say it’s a trend and others say it’s a only marketing strategy.

Lets take a closer look at Green Energy Web Hosting.

First of all, green energy is used to describe sources of energy that are environmentally friendly and non-polluting. Okay, you probably knew that already.

Now for an industry to be Green, it has to either provide its own energy from green sources (wind turbine, solar panels, etc.) or purchase green energy through the electrical grid. The second option has to be the most popular.

When buying green energy from the electrical grid, it doesn’t mean that the electricity reaching the consumer is generated from green energy sources. The electric company buys their electricity from electricity producers who may be generating it from fossil fuel, nuclear or renewable energy sources. But when you buy green energy, the electric company will buy this energy from green energy providers and redistribute it through the electric grid, therefore lowering the demand on energy from polluting sources.

A Green Web Hosting Company like HostPapa, buys carbon offsets for the equivalent of all the energy consumed by its operation. Carbon offsets are measured in metric tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent. One carbon offset represents the reduction of one metric ton of CO2. The offset purchase funds projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and generate renewable energy such as wind farms or hydroelectric dams.

Carbon offsets lets you take responsability for the environmental consequences of your activities.

Nice, short and to-the-point post that describes the basics of green web hosting. Thanks. I am currently doing some research while we are in the process of changing our site at http://www.7gens.com to sustainable hosting. Have you actually used HostPapa’s services? If so, could you please post your experience so far?
Thanks!
