What is FFmpeg Hosting?

October 9th, 2009

It is said that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ and in today’s dynamic world, website owners and webmasters are realizing that ‘a video is worth a thousand pictures’. Most website owners want to ensure that they can allow for video sharing on their site and this is where FFmpeg hosting becomes necessary.

FFmpeg hosting includes the FFmpeg software module that is pre installed. This hosting service helps in uploading and converting video format and streamlining videos to website and user resources. Web hosting options that do not include this technology find that it is either impossible or difficult to upload and share videos on regular web hosting platforms. FFmpeg hosting options allow consumers to log onto to a specific site, upload a video that is then transferred to the FFmpeg hosting server that converts the file into a format that can be viewed and downloaded by another user.

Typically, FFmpeg web hosting is used by video sharing sites like Google video and YouTube. It is also a feature that is required for social networking sites that allow users to share various videos that they might want to upload. In most cases, the features that accompany FFmpeg hosting are MySQL, FFmpeg, PHP 5.2.9, FFmpeg PHP, Mplayer and Mencoder. The Libogg, GD library, Libvorbis and flytool are also included.

Websites like Facebook, Orkut, YouTube, Google videos and those that want to upload promotion videos are the ones that have opted for FFmpeg hosting services. Creating sites that allow video sharing is not tough because FFmpeg hosting support scripts like Clipshare, ClipBucket, PHPMotion, MediaShare, AttachMax, Rayzz AdQuick and AlstraSoft Video share and more.

Since video sharing is a recent phenomenon, not all web hosting service providers are ready with the software that is required for FFmpeg web hosting. For those who want to offer streaming videos and video sharing features, FFmpeg web hosting is the only real option. With the advancement in technology the FFmpeg server does not need to be dedicated any more. You can therefore host your site on a shared web hosting platform and do not need a dedicated or semi dedicated server to do so. However, it should be noted that as the traffic on your site increases and more people begin to upload and download streaming videos, a dedicated server may be required.

Some of the most popular web hosting companies that offer FFmpeg hosting are HostUpon, Cirtexhosting, PacificHost, APTHost and IXWebHosting. The FFmpeg tool converts videos to the preferred .flv format in most cases. Other FFmpeg features that are common are capturing frames from video files, audio or video multimedia decoding, and capturing real time live video broadcast.

With unlimited web disk space and bandwidth per month, an FFmpeg hosting plan can come to you for as low as $3 per month. Depending on the features this can go up to $15 per month in some cases. All the other features of a basic web hosting plan are also included in the overall FFmpeg hosting plan so that video sharing is just one of the many features that you can use.

I have had PacificHost for a couple months now. If the service doesn’t get better I will dump all the tickets I have saved onto my PC. They delete tickets when they screw up so I have learned to save them and I will be posting everything all over the place if this gets any worse… Really hoping things get better.

Yesterday I had a very bad experience with Pacific host. Their online customer service is very very bad. During 2 hours of chat they twice transfer me between agents and finally did not answer my pre-sale questions. Will never be with them.
