While the iPhone or the iPod Touch may not be perceived as a professional tool for system administrators, it can still be quite useful when it comes to performing some basic system administration tasks. Potential improvements such as longer battery life, possibility of running multiple applications at the same time and the presence of a keyboard would make this smart phone a great tool for web server administrators.

Nevertheless, the iPhone and the iPod Touch are loaded with plenty of features and their 3G access is fast enough for casual access. Add to this the support for IPSec VPN and you still get one of the most powerful phone on the market.

1. TouchTerm Pro

This iPhone / iPod Touch application is a  terminal editor that allows you to perform remote administration of your Solaris / Unix / Linux servers. The programmable command library makes up for the iPhone lack of keyboard.

2. Jaadu Remote Desktop

This is a great article and I’d like to contribute one more to the list, Rove Mobile Admin (www.roveit.com). It goes quite a bit deeper than any of the other applications highlighted (for instance it integrates almost all of the applications featured into one piece of software and then some).
