Web hosting has become a fierce industry and new providers are popping up everywhere to a point where it’s becoming hard to choose the right company.
Among all these popular web hosts, two newcomers have caught the attention of website owners : Just Host and iPage.
While iPage has been in the hosting business since 1998, it seems that it’s just as of lately that their marketing strategies finally paid off, bringing them front of the web hosting industry.
iPage belongs to the Endurance Group which also owns many brands of web hosting services including FatCow and iPower among others. Their hosting platforms serves over 1,000,000 websites.
In the other side of the ring stands Just Host, a very well-known hosting company based in the UK with offices and data centers in the US. Founded in 2008, Just Host has managed to sign up over 150,000 customers at the time of this writing.
Both web hosting companies specialize in shared website hosting with unlimited disk space and unmetered monthly transfer.
From a technical standpoint, the same standard set of features is supported by both providers. This includes Linux web servers, PHP, Perl, CGI, Ruby on Rails and MySQL support. So unless your website is developed in ASP or ASP.Net, chances are it will be compatible with iPage or Just Host without a problem.

The major technical difference between Just Host and iPage has to be their control panel. Just Host offers cPanel, a leading industry control panel, which is widely used by popular web hosting companies around the world. Its graphical user interface is intuitive and very easy to use. cPanel is feature-rich and allows you to perform all imaginable web hosting management task, from creating email accounts and MySQL databases to protecting directories and making backups.
iPage on the other hand offers vDeck, a Plesk-like control panel used by most Endurance Group hosting brands. vDeck offers about the same set of features as cPanel with the exception of CRON tasks unfortunately. CRON tasks (or scheduled tasks if you prefer) allows you to automate the execution of scripts following a given schedule. They can be not only useful but essential in some cases. Hopefully iPage will add this feature in a near future.

iPage’s customer support is 100% located in North America. You can contact them by email, live chat, phone (toll free) or through their online ticket system. A knowledge base has been made available so that customers can help themselves out when it’s possible.
Just Host’s customer support is located in the UK. Agents are also available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can contact them by phone (toll free), email or by using their online ticket system.
So far I did not encounter any problem with both web host’s support. They’ve been quite professional and response was okay.
Something one must understand is that support is limited to using your hosting account or technical issues with the server. These guys won’t help you out with building your website or a PHP script bug for instance. They are there to make sure that the hosting environment is 100% functional but your website is own responsability. Don’t forget you’re paying less than $4 per month so you can’t expect them to work exclusively for you for 10 hours per month. We’re talking about basic support here. Don’t forget this when you sign with any affordable hosting company. Hire a professional developer or webmaster if you need to.
Just Host and iPage are ideal for personnal to small business websites although I don’t think I would choose them to handle online transactions for instance. And if I were to run a business website with high volume traffic or a mission-critical site, I’d go with a Business Web Host like InMotion Hosting. But for a startup site, hobby site or small business information site, both web hosts can handle the job very well at a very low cost.
I would tend to give a slight advantage to Just Host for offering the possibility of using cron tasks but if you don’t need that, choose whoever you like best. They’re both good web hosts with feature-rich packages, decent support and very reasonable pricing.
If you’re going directly to both providers’ homepage you’ll pay the big price. However there are ways to save money on web hosting with both Just Host and iPage.

iPage’s the best? For what? They don’t even know how to change a CNAME record and point the mail to ghs.google.com, I have been trying to contact them and work with 20 different technicians at iPage and they all say that the only way to get my mail.domain.com to work is to contact Google…WTF.
Bad bad bad.

This is why I always recommend buying your domain names elsewhere (like GoDaddy) so that you have full control over DNS entries.

My two sites have been hacked and, since I need to rebuild, I want to move to a new host. I like JustHost. But you say it isn’t good for onli9ne transactions. One of my sites sells a single item–a book–and I have a PayPal account. Is there some danger in my using JustHost in this case?

@Jacke: my point is, if you’re doing business online, get a Business Host. If you’re serious about your business, spend a few more bucks per month and it will be worth it, trust me.
InMotion Hosting has a very good business hosting plan with daily backups (as opposed to weekly), exclusive speed zones, tier 1 network (very, very fast connection), 24/7 in-house customer support. And it’s just for $2.00 more ($5.95).

iPage sucks guys! The database backup tool in my account is broken. I was totally frustrated with this. Importing and exporting a database through myphpAdmin is also not possible. My account is actually restricted from doing so. I asked the technical special specialist to fix this. It took them 2 days to give an answer: “your database should be functional now”. But I checked again. WTF! It’s still broken. Have they fixed it? I tell you, their specialists don’t know programming. If you are using iPage, please check your database backup now. It is very very important. You don’t want to lose everything you’ve built, do you?
