According to an article found on HostGator’s Facebook page, the web hosting leader has recently reached over 200,000 active customers and are on a pace to break 300,000 within a year.
The HostGator.com domain was registered on October 10, 2002. Founded by 22 year old college dropout Brent Oxley, the web hosting company saw it’s first days in a college dorm room. The business finally reached a point where it kept Oxley too busy to attend classes so he decided to quit school.
In 2006, HostGator moved from Boca Raton, Florida, to Houston, Texas. Oxley cites a number of reasons for the move but primary to gain access to a larger labor pool. Houston also had lower cost of living and renting an office building would prove to be cheaper there than in Florida.
Here are some statistics about the number of customers HostGator had since it’s foundation:
Here’s a look at HostGator’s homepage from 2002 :

While HostGator’s isn’t the world’s largest web hosting company, they are pretty close to it.
“I still haven’t reached my goal of HostGator becoming the world’s largest hosting company, but as one of the world’s largest and with how well things have been going, I can definitely see it happening within the next eight years. In order to achieve this, we’ll need to go more mainstream. This includes launching a brand to compete with GoDaddy, more billboards, starting TV commercials, and hiring many, many more high quality employees to continue supporting our customers.” Oxley says.
Well let’s bet HostGator will become the world largest web host. I know they will be.
