Almost a month ago I made a post about upcoming web hosting benchmark tests. I’ve now got some hosting accounts with HostGator, HostPapa, DreamHost, GoDaddy and 1and1 so let the match begin!
Let’s start by quickly introducing the contestants.
HostGator
In business since 2002, HostGator offers shared hosting, reseller hosting and dedicated servers (Linux and Windows).

HostPapa
A well known hosting company that has offices and data centers in USA and Canada. They use 100% green renewable energy to power their offices and data center.
They offer a single shared hosting plan at $6.95 per month.

DreamHost
Probably one of HostGator’s biggest competitor, this hosting company has been active since 1996. They offer shared hosting, virtual private servers and dedicated hosting.

GoDaddy
Who doesn’t know the daddy of hosting from their popular ads during the Super Bowl or from sponsored sports superstars Danica Patrick, Candice Michelle, Amanda Beard and Chad Johnson? GoDaddy is surely one agressive marketer but they are also one of the biggest (if not the biggest) domain name registrar on the Net.
Along with their registration services, they offer blog hosting, shared hosting, virtual private servers and dedicated servers. They offer hosting on both Linux and Windows platforms.
Price range:
- Shared Hosting - From $3.65 to $14.99 / mo.
- Virtual Dedicated - From $25.49 to $114.93 / mo.
- Dedicated Servers - From $67.00 to $299.90 / mo.

1and1
Another big player in the web hsoting industry, 1and1 has branches in the USA and UK.
They offer shared hosting, VPS hosting and dedicated servers.
Price range:
- Shared Hosting - From $3.99 to $19.99 / mo.
- VPS - From $29 to $59 / mo.
- Dedicated Servers - From $99 to $399 / mo.

So What’s Next?
I’ve decided not only to benchmark these hosts but also to take you inside so you can what their control panel look and feel like. I’ll also contact their technical support department and see how efficient and professional their are.
I am currently monitoring some of their servers using WhatsUp from IpSwitch. I’ve already got some statistics but it’s too early to judge on these (click to enlarge image in a new window).
The web servers are monitored only when the last hop before (usually a router or switch) is responding. Of course the results that will come out from this are subjectives and could vary depending on many factors like the location from where the monitoring is being performed.
