SysCP
From SysCP.org: SysCP, the System Control Panel is a server administration tool which enables an internet service provider to give their customers a web-based application to administrate their email addresses, their subdomains etc. The project was founded in autumn 2003 by Florian Lippert and was published on June, 15th 2004 under the GNU General Public Licence.

VHCS
I was a bit surprised to see that their website seemed to have been updated lately. The VHCS project had been put on hold for quite some time and no updates had been provided. I had been using VHCS for awhile but security issues and the lack of updates forced me to move to another control panel (cPanel). At the time, it looked like a promising control panel, let’s hope it will not be tossed aside again.
VHCS offers three levels of management: server administration, reseller and user panels. The latest version is 2.4 which is still kind of old since it’s been released in 2005.

web-cp
With a slogan like “Working toward version 1.0″ and the latest version released in 2005, this project seems to be dead but I might be wrong. Taking a quick tour of the online demo, I see that web-cp also offers server administration, reseller and user panels. You can manage email accounts, databases, backups, etc.

Webmin
Webmin is a lot more than a web hosting control panel. It allows you to manage pretty much every aspect of your Linux / Unix server. While it has to be one of the best free control panel (if not the best), it may require advanced system administration skills. Along with the Webmin panel, there’s also Usermin which offers a webmail interface, database management and web folder protection. There is also the Virtualmin panel which allows you to perform tasks similar to other web hosting control panels such as cPanel or Plesk.
Highy recommended.

VishwaKarma
VishwaKarma (nothing against Indian people but talk about a control panel name!) is a free Web-hosting control panel for GNU/Linux systems. It permits control of domains and e-mail accounts through a completely web-based interface, freeing server owners, reseller and domain owners from the need to login to the server and use command-line based tools.
I personnally prefer ISPConfig and Webmin when it comes to free control panels. Which one do you use and why?

What about ispCP omega, a very promising open source VHCS fork.

Hi Nick,
I didn’t know about ispCP. I’ll look into it and add it to the list for sure!
Thank you!
