There are few things that are important for a consistent and speedy performance of your website. Amongst them, disk space management is an important task.
The first requirement of managing disk space is that you should have enough for every need. It does not matter if you have only few dozens of pages, but your concern should be more on having space. The quantity of disk space lowers with the increase in amount of information like addition of web pages, database content and other elements.
All the permanent information in a computer gets stored on hard drive and the temporary one is stored in memory only. Although, both the components are different, but we often merge them with each other. With decrease in the amount of free space on hard drive, many factors start affecting your website.
Write a piece of information on as many papers as you can and arrange them in order. Then pick out one paper at one time and then discard them. Add some more papers into the bundle. Now, if you want to show your papers to someone else, you have to get them re-arranged in the order they were before. The same thing happens with the operating system that always shows the information in an arranged way, even when it is scattered.
All the real files gets scattered at places where they find space in the disk. If there is more space, it will be easier for operating system to locate them or store new information. By deleting the unwanted information, you will no longer require the system to work quickly as more space will be freed. This will help operating system in storing files faster.
But, this is only one point. Once you delete old files or change them, all the information gets more scattered. The operating system will take more time to get the information and display it in order. It will be more time consuming to arrange the information on a web page where all the information is more scattered. Therefore, you very first step should be to manage the disk space and keep the files in order.
A special utility called ‘de-fragger’ or de-fragmentation program comes for this work. You can ask your administrator to run this or if you have the authority, run it yourself. This will keep the all the information in order and help in quickly accessing them.
In short, there are three steps involved in managing the disk space. These are:
If only few files are present on the disk, there is no need to carry on the process. With the increasing number and size of the files, one must look forward to increasing the disk space and managing it efficiently. By keeping these things in mind, your website will surely deliver a significant performance.
You can reduce the additional work and get same results by using utilities. With this, some older files will get deleted in certain folder themselves. You can also set a de-fragmentation program to get automatically run at the time of light usage or in the background all the time. It is better to discuss about all these options with your system administrator, as he is the one who keeps everything in order. There are chances of him coming out with other alternate options to provide a better performing website.
