So What’s Up With 1and1.com?

I’ve been reading numerous 1and1.com reviews as well as various threads on popular forums and it seems that 1and1.com had more than it’s share of negative reviews. At the same time, it kind of surprise me that, alongside its UK branch, 1and1 is still one of the largest web hosting company on the planet. I guess that they not only have more unsatisfied customers than other hosts, but they may also have more satisfied customers too…

Since I wanted to benchmark several web hosts, I tought I’d have a look into 1and1 and see how it truly is. Today I’ve signed up for the 1&1 Home hosting plan at $4.99 / month. I think its the best choice since the cheaper plan is only a dollar cheaper but you don’t get three months free. The 1&1 Home plan also offer two domain names for free which is cool since this is worth at least $12.

Once I’ve signed up, it took about 3 hours to get the account creation email from 1and1. I’ve taken a look into the control panel and while it’s a custom one, it’s quite intuitive and effective. I will take you through a quick tour of their control in my next post so you can see what it’s like.

Even though I’ve just signed up with 1and1, I don’t think there’s much to be afraid of so I’m even gonna move one of my clients’ website to my 1and1 hosting account to see how things goes. I’ve got a monitoring server so I’ll poll their web server to track any downtimes.
